NAWOJ Canvasses For Inclusion Of More Women Journalists In Electoral Coverage Of 2023 Polls

The Executive Director Institute for Media and Society IMS, Dr, Akin Akinbolu who made the call said that most women journalists who lack sufficient skills in digital era reporting had been trained for effective participation in the coverage of the forth coming general election.

Dr Akinbolu was speaking at a two-day training organised for women Journalists on building Digital abd Multi-Media Storytelling skills.

Emphasising the need to build the capacity of women journalists in the coverage of electoral processes, he said “we have seen from our engagements and research that women journalists have not been participating in the coverage of electoral Processes.

“There is no doubt that digital skill status of women journalists in Nigeria is below average hence the need for this training.

“Now, with this training, they have acquired the digital era skills that are essential for effective and corporate participation especially in the forth coming general election. ”

The Programmes Manager, IMS, Mr Timothy Bamidele called on the participants to step down the training for a wider knowledge on multi – media skills that would enhance the reportage of 2023 general election.

Two facilitators and Content experts, Cyril Osifo Omozugba and Ehi Ohiani advised participants on the essence of being abreast of Social Media strategies and digital tools in the discharge of their duties.

In a remark, the National President Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ Comrade Ladi Bala implored participants to make effective use of what they learnt at the training and expressed gratitude to the organisers for contributing to building the capacity of female journalists.

The NAWOJ Boss maintained that the society would feel the impact of the workshop if more women Journalists would be allowed to cover the general election around the corner.

According to her ” with this training, more women Journalists in Nigeria are ready to deal with electoral misinformation. This is an eye opener on improving election story telling skills this period in our God given country.”

The capacity building workshop which had participants drawn from electronic media in the South East Zone, was organized by the Institute for Media and Society IMS in conjunction with the European Union EU.
