The Nigerian government through the Ministry of Education has charged youths and young people to raise high the flag of peace as a display of their sheer commitment to national unity and a sustainable peaceful future for all.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, made the appeal while addressing Journalists on the commemoration of 2023 Commonwealth Day, scheduled for Monday.

The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Andrew Adejo, stated that Nigeria as a member state of the Commonwealth will mutually work together for the promotion of collective peace, democracy and prosperity.

This year’s theme: ”forging a sustainable and peaceful common future” is timely as it sets to aid promotion, tolerance, respect, understanding and moderation, which are necessary values for peaceful coexistence.

Adamu stated that this will also assist young people to progressively shun violence and help them adopt dialogue as a means of redress.

He further explained that the ministry has tasked other state ministries of Education nationwide to put in place programmes and activities in all their respective educational institutions to mark this auspicious day.

The Minister, who also reeled out line ups for the celebration of this year’s Commonwealth Day, explained that this is done to ensure that all schools at all levels participate.

Some private and public schools, including Federal Unity Colleges within the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) and its environs participated in the commemoration quiz competition, which took place at the ministry’s conference hall, second floor podium, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, 16th February, 2023.

However, as part of the events scheduled for the day, rehearsal is slated for Friday, 10th March, 2023 at the Federal Ministry of Education and the D- Day, 13th March, 2023 at National Universities Commission (NUC) Idris Abdulkadir conference Hall.

He also clarified that the youth lecture topics will center on Environmental Sustainability and Conflict Resolution as well as Education and Skill Development.

This year’s Commonwealth Day will hold on Monday, 13th March 2023.
