As part of measures to cushion the trauma of last Thursday’s fatal accident in Enugu, the Enugu State Government has said it will pick up their medical bills.

Recall that the ghastly accident happened at the CBN junction by Enugu Onitsha express way leaving five persons dead and fifteen others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Enugu State, Mr Joseph Toby, gave the statistics of the victims.

According to him, three male and two female passengers died on the spot while fifteen others – ten males and five females – were seriously injured in the accident.

Toby said the two vehicles involved in the crash had a head-on collision while using a single lane.

He added that the injured were taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu and to a private hospital on the Expressway while the corpses were deposited at the Colliery Hospital mortuary in Enugu.

He blamed the accident on lack of lane discipline, over-speeding and brake failure.

Eyewitnesses, however, blamed the accident on the poor state of the road which compelled many motorists to drive against traffic rather than use the failed lane of the dual-carriage way.

Shortly after the accident, the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo, visited survivors on behalf of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Ezeilo announced free medical treatment for them.

“The Government will offset the medical bills, so let nothing delay the treatment of the injured,’’ she said.
