The Ebonyi Sports Council has completed plans to organize the best Olympic Day-Run in the history of the state on June 24, to honour the new Governor,  Francis Nwifuru.

The Director of Sports in the state, Emmanuel Utobo made the disclosure in an interview in Abakaliki.

Utobo who is also Chairman, Forum of Directors of Sports in Nigeria, said that modalities had been put in place to ensure a colourful event.

“We wil use the event to welcome our new sports-loving governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru on the saddle of the state’s governance.

“Nwifuru is a young, renowned sports enthusiast who contributed to sports development in the state as the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

“He single-handedly sponsored football and other sporting events in Izzi clan and other parts of the state, to the benefit of the youths.”

The director of sports said that schools and other sporting groups would show-case their talents during the olympic day-run.

“We will prove to the national sports authorities that Ebonyi is a force to reckon with in matters of sports in the country.

“The Olympic day-run holds every four years but had not been held recently due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Utobo said that the state was intensifying preparations for the forthcoming national youth games to ensure a credible representation.

“We will always collaborate with the new government to ensure that the sporting spirit is rekindled in the state.

“We have been joyful since Nwifuru’s inauguration into office and view it as a prayer answered.”
