The 2023 Ebonyi governor’s cup competition has kicked-off in Abakaliki with Local Government Areas in the state exuding confidence of carting the coveted trophy.

The opening match watched by a capacity crowd at the Pa Ngele Oruta stadium Abakaliki, saw defending champions Edda LGA drawing goalless with Ezza North.

Chairman of Ezza North LGA, Chief Moses Nome said his team was happy because it battled the ‘much touted’ defending champions to standstill.

“This has given the players confidence that they can win the cup.

“We would support the team as a council to deliver the goods and I am sure the coaches will sustain this tempo.

Chief Chima Ekumankama, Chairman of Edda LGA praised his team for its gallantry, noting that it has become the ‘target’ of other teams.

“My team has attracted the envy of others and even the officiating in this match was questionable.

“Our opponents knew it played against Lions and we will still prove our mettle in the competition,”

He dismissal insinuations that his team played with established stars noting that the council was endowed with talents.

“Those saying that some of my players play for Enyimba Football Club of Aba’s junior team are misinformed because talents abound in my area.

“Most players from my area play for foreign clubs and such is a blessing from God.

The state commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike expressed joy over the commencement of the competition, noting that the state was poised for sporting glory.

“You can see enthusiasm on the faces of players, officials and spectators and the joy which football brings has returned to the state.

“We will harness talents discovered in this competition and groom them to form a formidable state team.
