Special Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have been urged to deepen the ideals of volunteerism, to achieve the Corps’ mandate of ensuring safer roads.

The National Coordinator of the Special Marshals, Dr John Ugbebor made the call on Saturday in Abakaliki during a sectoral workshop for Special Marshals in Ebonyi.

Ugbebor said that Special Marshals should desire to serve the society voluntarily without expecting any gains in return.

“We should always be ready to offer our treasures, talents and time to support the FRSC being part of its image-making. “This is why we have individuals who have retired from their various services but are not tired to serve humanity,”

The National Coordinator urged Special Marshals to pay increased attention to its operational guidelines to enhance the volunteerism ideals.

“We must participate actively in workshops and other modes of public enlightenment, traffic control, highway patrols, project execution among others.

“We should not just pay our annual dues and shun activities demanded of us as we have critical roles to play in ensuring safer roads.”

He noted that there are about 15,000 Special Marshals in the country with new recruits bolstering its number,”

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Biu commended the ‘vital’ role played by Special Marshals in realizing the Corps’ mandate of ensuring safer roads in Nigeria.

Biu, in a message read by the Enugu Zonal Commanding Officer of the corps, Ocheja Ameh said that the Corps is presently seen as a beacon in road safety administration in West Africa.

“The Corps administration strives hard to save the lives of citizens especially the productive workforce mostly affected by road crashes.”

The State Coordinator of Special Marshals, Richard Idike welcomed participants to the workshop, noting that it came when the sector had recorded several achievements.

“We have provided a 6.5 KVA generator to the command, installed a functional medical ward screen and examination bed at its clinic among others.”

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, Henry Igwe said the workshop was pursuant to provisions of section 27 of the special marshals guidelines 2021.

A Participant at the workshop and the Special Marshals State Public Enlightenment Officer, Thomas Otuu, said they had been equipped with requisite knowledge for enhanced efficiency.

The former Special Marshals State Coordinator Prof. Henry Urochukwu delivered a lecture on the theme of the workshop: ‘volunteerism in road safety management.
