The Transition Committee Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Nnamdi Ekweme has called on the federal government to come to the aid of the council area in tackling erosion menace ravaging the food producing area especially this dry season.

Interacting with newsmen in Awka Ekwueme said the erosion menace in the area was beyond what the State budget could attend to, even though the present  administration has been doing it’s best in that regard especially at the Oko Community where over half a billion naira contract had been awarded to mitigate the situation.

Ekwueme disclosed that  drainage channels constructed in the early eighties have given way and can no longer contain the volume of water and erosion in the area.

He also disclosed that the local government had initiated other steps including directing all the villages and communities to desist from indiscriminate sand excavation which, he noted,  contributed to worsening  the life –  threatening situation.

The Local Government boss encouraged the people to contribute in mitigating the menace by having water sumps in their compound to soak up waters generated from rooftops as well as constantly clear their drainage channels.

Ekwueme said Orumba North local government area would continue to execute capital projects aimed at improving the lives of the people in line with the blue print of the present administration in the State.

The Transition Committee Chairman hinted that so far the council has completed some projects which include the traditional rulers building at the LGA Secretariat, delivered security vehicle and gadgets to  vigilante groups, sunk borehole in Ufuma, constructed culverts and 72 meter drainages in Ndiowu Community and also built Public conveniences at Eke Oko market among other projects.
