Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi has expressed sadness over the death of his townsman, former Minister and Science Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.

Umahi in a condolence message he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Saturday in Abakaliki, expressed “shock and a deep sense of loss” over Onu’s demise.

The Former Ebonyi Governor in the message, described Onu who was the Pioneer Civilian Governor of Abia, as a nationalist and trailblazer.

“It is indeed the bitterest moment for the people of Uburu community where we hail from and a great loss not only to Ebonyi but Nigeria.

“Onu made a remarkable impact in nation- building and service to humanity as my people have lost an illustrious son.

“This great patriot set a hallmark of precedents in intellects, integrity, industry, objectivity, and passion for excellence in all his encounters in governance and public affairs.”

Umahi offered his condolences to Onu’s immediate and extended families including others afflicted by the painful loss.

“Our consolation and fortitude in this moment of adversity, are the assurances that he lived the true purpose of life, which is service to God and humanity.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace and as he transits to immortality, I pray for God’s eternal mercies upon him.

” I convey most heartily to his family, esteemed regards and best wishes of my family, the management and staff of the Federal Ministry of Works.”

The former minister died on April 11 at an Abuja hospital, aged 73.

Onu was the first Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Governors (presently Nigeria Governors Forum) and a former National Chairman/ Leader of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

He facilitated discussions on the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was a Presidential Aspirant under the party in the 2023 general elections.
